23 January 09 - Market Update 1

STOCKS IN EUROPE, ASIA DROP, STOXX 600 FALLS TO 5 YR LOW
Stocks in Europe fell, sending the Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index to the lowest level in more than five years, as concern deepened the global economic slump will erode earnings. Asian shares and U.S. index futures declined.

The Stoxx 600 Index dropped 2 percent to 179.21. A close at this level would be the lowest since April 2003.

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index retreated 2.6 percent as Sony Corp. tumbled. The yen approached its strongest level since 1995 versus the dollar and was set for its best weekly gain in three months against the pound as concern the global slowdown will worsen spurred demand for Japan’s currency.

Futures on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index expiring in March fell 1.6 percent after Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reported its ninth consecutive loss.

CORN, SOYBEANS FALL AS RECESSION MAY CUT FURTHER DEMAND FOR US CROPS
Corn and Soybeans both dropped for a second day on speculation the worsening global recession will curb demand for the crops. China’s economic slowdown, already the deepest in seven years, is expected to worsen even more.

Corn has declined 52% from a record in June and Soybeans are down 38% from the all-time high in July.

Support: 378.0 372.5
Resistance: 381.5 386.0 388.5

POUND DROPS AGAINST DOLLAR, EURO, AFTER GDP WORSE THAN FORECAST
The pound slid to the lowest level since 1985 against the dollar and headed for its biggest weekly drop in three months after a report showed the U.K. economy shrank more than forecast in the fourth quarter
The U.K. currency also declined versus the euro as the economy suffered its biggest contraction since 1980. Bank of England Governor Mervyn King said this week officials may start buying assets within weeks, after cutting interest rates to the lowest level since 1694.
“The fiscal and monetary measures highlight just how bad things are and that’s really turned sentiment against sterling,”
said Ian Stannard, a senior currency strategist at BNP Paribas SA in London. “Sterling is going to remain under severe pressure.
We’re going to get continuing bad news on the economy.”
The pound dropped to $1.3598, the lowest level since September 1985, and was trading down 1.9 percent at $1.3619 by
9:35 a.m. in London. The pound has fallen 7.6 percent in the week, the biggest drop since the five days ending Oct. 24. Against the euro, the U.K. currency weakened 0.5 percent to 94.20 pence, taking its weekly decline to 4.4 percent.
Gross domestic product fell 1.5 percent from the previous three months, the Office for National Statistics said today in London. Economists predicted a contraction of 1.2 percent, according to the median of 33 estimates in a Bloomberg survey. The economy has now shrunk for two consecutive quarters, the definition of a recession.
Two-year government notes stayed higher, with the yield falling six basis points to 1.40 percent. The 10-year gilt yield was at 3.55 percent.
